Prof. Dr. Klaus Greve

Klaus Greve is Professor of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing at the University of Bonn. He studied at the Universities of Kiel, Copenhagen and Hamburg and received his PhD from the University of Oldenburg in 1986. Afterwards he worked as a research assistant for computer applications in geography at the University of Osnabrück. Then he moved to the Hamburg administration in 1991. After assignments at the police and the harbour administration, he became IT manager of the Hamburg environmental administration in 1992. There he built up the Hamburg Environmental Information System HUIS and worked in committees of the federal-state cooperation. In 1996, he was appointed Professor of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing at the University of Bonn. Since 2011, he has been spokesperson for the interdisciplinary Center for Remote Sensing of Land Surfaces at the University of Bonn. His work focuses on environmental information systems, spatial data infrastructure, GIS and Earth observation in disaster management, and value creation with geospatial information. He is particularly interested in collaborating with UN institutions in the UN Sustainability Cluster in Bonn. With the United Nations University, he established a joint master's program on risk research. With UN-SPIDER (United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response), he is conducting research on improving the use of Earth observation products to support disaster management, primarily in Africa. Klaus Greve is also active as a policy and management consultant.
